Your textbook states the following: "Organizational culture is a system of shared assumptions, values, and beliefs that helps individuals understand which behaviors are and are not appropriate within an organization. Cultures can be a source of competitive advantage for organizations. Strong organizational cultures can be an organizing as well as a controlling mechanism for organizations." And, although not discussed in detail in ch. 10, strategic human resource management (SHRM) is not just a function of the HR department-all managers and executives need to be involved because the role of people is so vital to a company's competitive advantage. SHRM tailors recruitment to select those individuals who fit with the company culture.
One of the most recent sexual harassment scandals in the news involved the former Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. The allegations against the former governor included the accusation of a "toxic workplace environment - culture." Many wonder how could things go so far and nothing was done to address the concerns of those who felt harassed. What can be done in the workplace to address issues of sexual harassment and toxic environments? How were inappropriate behaviors addressed or not?
