Assignment: The Role of Narrative Devices in Comprehension in Novels Essay

As we learned in "What Are Research Methods?" a research proposal should include the following:

A. "A clear articulation of your question;
B. The critical conversation to which you hope your research contributes;
C. Your chosen research method;
D. The basic methodology that guides your choice of method;
E. Plans for how you will make sense of your data" (Clary-Lemon, Mueller, & Pantelides 20)

To begin your Research Proposal, identify the critical conversation you're planning to join with your research project this semester and the research question you've developed to explore a specific public, workplace, academic, or translingual genre. You should indicate here both your understanding of the genre you've chosen and your reasoning for choosing it - why is it interesting or useful for you to learn more about how writing and communication works in this way? What do you want to learn or hope to get out of this research project?

Then propose a specific and detailed plan for conducting primary research around your chosen line of inquiry and research questions. This plan should include specific methods for collecting and analyzing data - genres you're going to collect, observations you might conduct, participants you're going to interview, all of the questions you're going to ask, etc.

A. First, for textual, rhetorical, genre, or multimodal analysis: Which did you choose, and why does that make sense based on your research question? What specific examples of the genres are you going to observe or collect? When/where will you be able to access them? In addition:

a. If you are going to do archival research: What archives are you going to access and what genres do you expect to learn about/find there?

b. If you chose interviews or surveys: Identify the person/people you're going to interview/survey, why those participants make sense/have credibility based on your research question, and how you have access to interview that person/people (AKA where you plan to distribute the survey and how you'll be sure you get enough credible, useful responses/whether you plan to conduct the interview over email, in person, or virtually, and how you're sure that they'll agree to be interviewed, especially within the limited timeframe we have - your primary data notes are due the Tuesday we're back from Spring Break). Then make a list of 8-10 interview/survey questions you plan to ask to learn more about the genre you are studying, following the guidelines of "Creating Good Interview and Survey Questions".

B. Detail your selection criteria: how and why did you choose the specific examples of genre or rhetoric you're going to study, and why does that make sense based on your research questions? (Anyone who is also doing interviews or surveys, your selection criteria for participants should already be detailed in response to the prompt above). You need to justify your decisions here, so make sure to explain with specific detail how these methods will provide insight into your research questions.

C. End with a timeline for conducting your primary research. You will need to include specific dates and action items for this timeline, showing what kind of work will happen from week 5 until week 8. Keep in mind that if you are including any element of human research, you want to get started sooner rather than later to allow time for responses.
