Case Study: This week, you are reading two of the most significant pieces in the history of feminism and in the lives of women of color, especially as they relate to the lives of Black women and women of color.
Please pay special attention to what the authors have to say, and watch the videos as well. You will need to quote what Grace Dunn says about Audre Lorde AND the statement from the Combahee River Collective in your response.
The Combahee River Collective published their statement in 1977. They were a powerful, young group of Black women thinkers and activists. The collective outlined why the struggles of Black women were distinct from those of other women in the US, particularly how they were different from the struggles of middle class white women. Their piece reflects very clearly on the earlier writing of Sojourner Truth, and her statements about not being recognized fully as a woman in the US. The statement ends by outlining some of the specific struggles that lie before women of color. Audre Lorde picks up on this idea two years later in her writing.
