Read the case in the role of a consultant. Use the USCC-CT framework as a guideline to apply the theories and concepts of power, politics and influence introduced in the readings. Critical thinking is necessary, but not sufficient.
I. Uncover the issues and root causes and Select the most critical problem. Clearly identify the main problem and specific key issues/root causes using details from the case and concepts and theories. Be clear and concise. This is usually 1 well-developed paragraph or several bullets.
Here are questions to jumpstart your analysis:
When considering the root causes of the conflict between Davis and Green, consider the following in your analysis:
What is your analysis of Thomas Green's actions and job performance in his first five months? What mistakes did he make?
What are the work styles and personalities of Green and Frank Davis?
How do the actions of Thomas Green differ from the expectations of Frank Davis?
What is role of others in the organization in this conflict?
What is/are the most significant problem(s) that Green needs to address that illustrate concepts from this week's readings?
II. Identify 2-3 alternatives to resolve the issues/problem. Identify 2-3 realistic alternatives (there may be more but focus on the root causes) that address the issues caused by the main problem. Use relevant course concepts, theories and models (i.e. terms) to explain the benefits and consequences/challenges of each (pros and cons). We realize that you may have some creative ideas, but, if they do not illustrate concepts from in our readings. It may be in bullet form but must be fully explained and supported.
What choice of actions does Thomas Green have to improve his situation? Support with course concepts.
III. Choose a solution and implementation steps. Choose one of the alternatives as the final recommendation and expand on it. Explain your choice with solid reasoning informed by what you know and have learned from the readings. For example, explain why this alternative is better than the others or why you should take this action first. Include implementation steps if they are relevant. This should be one well-developed, detailed paragraph.
Which of the alternatives would you recommend to Green? Why?
What specific action steps would need to be taken? What specific outcomes would be consistent with Green's overall goals? What challenges do you see and how would you deal with them?
