Question

The patient was walking his dog three days ago in a local park. While walking, a mountain biker came up from behind and startled him and his dog. He turned quickly to pull his dog out of the way. He noticed an immediate pain in the right knee. Within 30 minutes, he had significant swelling of the right knee. He could walk back to the car and, once at home, elevated his right leg and iced the knee. The swelling has improved and can walk with minimal discomfort in the right knee. But has been having a sensation that the right knee will give out, especially when going down the stairs. The clinician is getting ready to examine the affected knee and plans to start with inspecting both knees for comparison, palpating bilaterally, testing the range of motion, and then ending with special maneuvers.
