Question: The sixth case study we will be discussing is Case 9.5, "Swedish Daddies," that is, pgs. 466-467 of Modern Issues in Business. This case study covers the difference in paid family leave across sex and country, revealing changing cultural standards regarding fathers taking leave from their careers to help raise the children of the family. It also points out differences in businesses, laws, and cultures between nations like the United States and Sweden on issues like this. Additionally, it points out the changing role of women in the economy as more and more women take on careers, graduate college, and attain managerial positions. It's an extremely interesting, multi-faceted case. Students should feel free to approach it from any number of angles. The following are a few questions from the case study presented by Barry and Shaw with a few modifications and suggestions. They are meant to spur discussion: "If you have, or plan to have, children, what sort of balance to you seek between career and family life? Do you believe that the mindset of corporate America is conducive to the type of work-and-family arrangement that would suit you?" Why or why not? Would you change anything? If so, what?
