1. Sabastian, a 42-year-old Hispanic man, was hired 3 months ago to be a maintenance worker in a warehouse. This is a heavy lifting job that requires him to move large pipes weighing up to 80 pounds. He also performs repairs such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc. All of which require him to carry a 25lb toolbox around all day. Last week he went to the doctor because he was having severe pain in his back. The doctor gave him a note that said he could no longer lift more than 10lbs and that he should stay out of work for 2 weeks. When he sent the note into work his boss, Marcus, he called him. Marcus said that if he could not lift more then 10 pounds, he would be terminated.

2. Carolyn, the manager at Dewy, Cheatem and Howe funeral home, has noticed that her accounting clerk, Gail, has been spending a lot of time online lately. Gail is 45 years old, married and has been working for DCH for 5 years. Carolyn pulls up Gail's screen while she is a work and sees that Gail is spending time on eHarmony responding to potential suitors. Carolyn calls Gail into the office to express her disappointment. Gail is very embarrassed and calls it an invasion of privacy. She says that the computer is located in her locked office where no one else can see it. She also says that she is only on the site during her lunch hour. There is no evidence that her work product has decreased or has been negatively affected.

3. Ahmed, a dock worker at your produce company tells you that his mother is sick and needs to go to kidney dialysis daily. Ahmed's lives with his mother, next door to your company. His mother does not drive. Therefore, he must take her to dialysis. The hours of work are 5am to 2pm. The only time she could get for the dialysis is 10am each day. The treatment takes approximately 3 hours. The dialysis facility is located about 15 minutes from work.

4. You are the HR Director for a large company that owns many rental properties. Today, you received a call from Tim, a maintenance worker at one of you complexes. He claims that Jojo, a rental agent in the office has been sexually harassing him. You go there to investigate. You interview Tim who says that Jojo is constantly asking him out on dates and brushes her breasts up against him when he is in the office. You meet with Jojo. She tells you that she was dating Tim for a while. They used to go to the model apartment and have sex, but he recently broke it off when his wife found out. She says she has not gone near him since. You interview Tim again, who admits that they dated and used the model apartment a couple of times but he ended the relationship months ago and she won't leave him alone.

5. In 1967, a group of African Americans sued the state of Alabama's electric company, claiming that they were discriminated against in hiring and promotions. The electric company has a policy that employees applying for jobs as "linesman," a person who climbs telephone poles and hooks up power lines, must have a high school diploma and pass an intelligence test. The group argued that the requirements did not measure a person's ability to climb a telephone pole and connect wires. They also claimed that the segregated school system in the state was inferior to the white school system.
