In your role as a community-based social worker serving families experiencing financial hardship, you are part of a coalition comprised of other helping professionals, clients, community members, educators, and religious leaders interested in advocating for policy change. Members have been asked to share policy proposals with the coalition so the group can decide together which proposals will be presented to the elected officials who have the power to change policy.
Complete the following steps to plan and develop your ideas for the assessment:
- Research a need in your community that adversely affects families in low socio-economic communities.
- Brainstorm ideas for a policy that could alleviate challenges or stressors associated with the need.
- Review the policy brief examples in this week's Learning Activities folder.
Include the following in your policy brief:
Overview - Provide a brief overview of the policy. Consider these guiding questions:
- When was the policy passed
- What social problem is the policy trying to address
- What are some relevant revisions that have been made to the policy
- What are some intended and unintended outcomes of the policy
Social Factors - Describe the American or societal values or ideals that have influenced the policy. Consider these guiding questions:
- What are the values or ideals of those who support the policy
- What are the values or ideals of those who oppose the policy
Economic Factors - Describe financial costs associated with the policy. Consider these guiding question
- What are the values or ideals of those who support the policy
- What are the values or ideals of those who oppose the policy
Political Factors - Describe the impact of politics on the creation or implementation of the policy. Consider these guiding questions:
- What were some initial projected costs of the policy
- How do those costs compare with the costs of the policy today? Have they increased or decreased Explan.
- What factors may have contributed to the increase or decrease in costs
- Are the social welfare benefits and costs appropriately aligned Explan.
- Consider searching the Congressional Budget Office website for economic data about your chosen policy.
Policy Proposal - Provide 2 to 3 recommndations for changes to the policy. Consider these guiding questions:
- What specific changes or enhancements should the coalition consider
- What impact will your recommndations have on the community
- How will the need you identified be alleviated or addresse
- How do the changes support the general goals of the policy
- What are some obstacles the coalition may face in presenting your proposal to legislators or other stakeholders
- What resources should the coalition acquire to support your proposal
- What are some social, economic, or political factors that are conducive to the proposed changes
