Write you personal narrative about some experience or set of experiences that made you aware of society's role in molding-and "disciplining"-your individual and/or social identity. One model for this kind of narrative is the type of "menstruation narrative" you read in The Curse-but you can also think of the narrators of The Penelopiad or The House on Mango Street. You can take up your experience of gender, sexuality, race, class, ability, etc., and explain as well as analyze the circumstances that led to your realization that your position in mainstream society was not the accepted norm, or not "who I want to be."

Have you had an experience that revealed to you, unexpectedly, what social injustice looks like? That made you more self-aware about how you and/or others are treated based on their subject position? When, say, racism, or homophobia, or misogyny, or some other form of prejudice toward yourself or another was really made clear to you? When you or someone else were deeply affected/injured by hate speech or a hate crime, or by mocking a person's weight, or ability, or sexuality, or gender ... Maybe this happens to you every day. Write about that, and how prolonged exposure to these events affects your view of yourself, your community, society, Penn State.
Have you experienced shame or embarrassment or rejection because you do not fit "the norm", whether in terms of your body, or your gender, sex, skin color, and so forth?
Have you been actively not welcomed into a community? Or ridiculed for wanting to pursue a certain academic or professional major that does not fit what your friends, parents or family, classmates, or colleagues think you "should" be doing? Or what's "expected" or "proper" for some of your (fill in the blank)?
