Resource Planning

The village school have been allocated a grant to buy several computers. They want to convert an old storeroom as a computer resource room but have a very small budget. They have however had several promises of support from tradesmen and parents and are therefore planning to carry out the conversion by enlisting the help of these volunteers. The new computer room should ideally be available for the first week in September - the start of the new academic year.

Can you help the head teacher work out what skills she will require and when she will need these different types of skills so that she can start to notify the volunteers when they could help.

Some Assumptions
• Electrical wiring, plastering, floor laying and cabling for networks and phones, must all be performed by the relevant skilled personnel
• Painting, furniture assembly and final decoration can be carried out by any volunteers
• Six computers and two printers will be ordered on 1 June and will arrive 12 weeks later, with software installed and ready to run
• Six flat pack desks and two printer tables need to be ordered. They will take 2 weeks to arrive from ordering. When delivered they will take half a day each to assemble. (They need to be assembled in the room as they will not easily fit through the door)
• The room requires re-wiring and will need network connections to be installed. There also needs to be a ‘phone line to allow connection to the internet
• Because rewiring involves embedding wires in the walls, the room will need to be re-plastered and then painted when the plaster is dry. It is anticipated that the room will need 3 coats of paint.
• A tiled floor will be laid in the room - this should not be walked on for 24 hours after fitting
• A wooden skirting board will be added after the floor has been tiled
• Final fitting of the room will involve placing the furniture, connecting the computers and putting up notice boards and pictures
