Case Study:

1. Communication skills (verbal & written): Listens actively to others (with friends, family or peers), asks relevant questions, speaks clearly and concisely, does not interrupt others. Do you often feel misunderstood? Do you feel like you can speak up when needed?

Do you care about your spelling? Are you aware of how your message (tone, content) may impact others? Can you pick up the phone to call for more information for a product?

2. Interpersonal skills: Willing to interact with challenging personalities and meet new people, flexible, people-orientated, motivated, assertive, able to teach others a new skill. Are you able to introduce yourself confidently to new people? Do you make friends easily? Are you considered a team player? Would you described as someone who would help a stranger? Can you use humour appropriately and that does not offend others?

3. Able to Problem Solve & Be Creative: Resourceful, can find a solution to all problems, do you try to figure things out on your own, do you ask for help when needed. Are you able to observe and analyze situations from different perspectives? Do you easily get stuck when you can't figure something out? How do you react? Would you describe yourself as someone who makes things happen, watches things happen, wonders what happened? What do you do when things don't go your way? Where do you start if you are lost and don't have any directions?

4. Knowledge of Subject Matter: Are you interested to do well in your courses by completing assigned readings, assignments to learn about counselling, interventions and programming methods, and techniques for therapeutic relationship building? How do you make sure you will be well trained to do this important work in CYC? What study habits do you use? What percentage do you aim to have for ALL your courses in the CYC program? Who or what is motivating you to pass?

5. Organizational Skills: Plans, develops schedules, and able to submit work on time, complete tasks before they are due, know where to find all your personal belongings and course material. Are you able to include all details in your assignments? Do you prioritize tasks that need more time? Do you wait for the night before to plan, organize and complete assignments? Are you often late to class, appointments, etc.? Is being organized a personal value of yours? How does this impact others in your life?

6. Being Objective: Open to seeing both sides of the situation while recognizing the influence of personal values, interests, beliefs, and judgments. Do you share FB/ instagram/ twitter posts without checking if they are accurate/ up to date? (Ex: missing child, political views). What does equality mean to you? Are you someone easily convinced that the other person is in the wrong? If not, why? Is there always a right and wrong, or can you see from both sides of the situation? How are you able do that?

7. Emotional Maturity/ Intelligence: Confident, positive, able to see the good in everything, ability to handle difficult and stressful situations, manage strong emotions effectively, seek support when required, able to distance oneself from taking on a friend's problem. Are you able to calm yourself down when upset? Would you consider yourself as someone who has predictable moods? Are you able to recognize and label your feelings before acting on them? What does it mean to sense and respond to what others may be feeling?

8. Awareness of Diversity: Sensitive, respectful and inclusive to differences in age, culture, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic class etc. How is your ethic or cultural influences stereotyped in Canadian society? (Ex: If you live in a rural area, does that make you "hick" or lover of country music and jacked up trucks?). How informed are you about cultural and gender differences? Where do you get this information? How can you empower others who are different from you?

9. Maintain Confidentiality: Able to keep information private, able to refrain from sharing stories that your friends tell you in private. You know if it is your story to tell? What is the difference between gossip and debriefing? What would warrant that you share private client information, and with who?

10. Being Patient: Are you able to delay gratification and wait without being frustrated Ex: not checking phone as soon as notification sounds. Are you described as a patient person? What kinds of things do you feel and do while waiting? Is this a pleasant experience? How do you feel when your marks are not posted for 2 weeks? Are you willing to start with a part-time CYC job for 3-6 months knowing a full-time position is possible?
