During a blood collection, a patient begins to hyperventilate and complain of dizziness, nausea and vertigo. The patient, sitting in a supportive phlebotomy chair, begins to faint. What should the phlebotomist do? Immediately remove the tourniquet and needle and apply pressure to the venipuncture site. Make use of an ammonia inhalant. Ask the patient to take deep breaths, exercise the legs gently and point and unpoint the toes. Allow the patient to leave once they are feeling better.
