Case Questions
Question 1. What should Kevin Mooney do, and why? Be specific.
(This is a complex question. Note that it does not ask what you would do, but rather what Kevin Mooney should do. You need to come to know him. Consider what criteria and considerations should be weighed, and how, in making the decision? What are the risks and rewards for each option? Take the time to determine and establish a framework for your answer before you endeavour to define the answer. Avoid superficiality; pay the price to do good work. Good work deserves good grades, and is the most satisfying.)
Use the following questions to help guide your analysis of the case. Hand in a copy of this to me in the Canvas drop box prior to the start of class.
Question 1 Identify the decision maker
- who is he? - what are his goals? - what are his motivations/drivers? Etc
Question 2 Identify the Problem
- what is the issue/problem we need to solve (do not confuse solutions with the problem)
Question 3 Identify evaluation criteria
- these are the things that you will use to help analyse the possible alternatives (what things are important to the decision maker in making the decision?). For example: "we must meet a limited budget" is a criterion.
Question 4 Alternatives
- what are the possible solutions to the problem? - try and have more than one - "do nothing" is always an option, although not usually the right one otherwise the case would not have been written...
Question 5 Analyse the Alternatives
- evaluate them against the check list of decision criteria
Question 6 What should Kevin Mooney do?
- explain why you are recommending this particular solution. - how does your recommendation relate to Mooney's background?
