Assignment
The NUMMI joint venture between Chevrolet and Toyota back in the mid 1980's. Read the article or Listen to the podcast and then answer the following questions. You do not have to have extensive answers to the questions, but they should be thoughtful, whih you have all been excellent at so far.
Ultimately whose fault was it that this Joint Venture failed and why?
What should GM hierarchy have done differently and why?
Do you think Toyota was really interested in working with GM, or were they more interested in learning about American business practices in order to help them create a better marketing plan for the U.S.?
If, you think that Toyota had more self-serving interests, were they wrong for doing this?
Based on what you have heard about GM, like the recent ignition switch problem which may have caused hundreds of deaths and a change at the top of GM, did GM learn anything?
Do you think joint ventures are a good idea, particularly with overseas companies or organizations? Can you find some positive or negative examples (e.g. Chrysler and Daimler-Benz)?
Why is it so hard to change corporate culture, even when it is apparent that the current culture has problems?
