Question: The humanistic approach to counseling has some benefits and strategies that are appropriate when students find themself in potential unsafe and/or situations. First, you want to focus on the here and now, and how this situation is impacting at the present moment. Additionally, you can teach using "I messages" and having students accept responsibility for their part of the problem. Finally, you can brainstorm and role play solutions and possible resolutions to the issue. Helping students talk through the situation and supporting them can help them alleviate the hurt feelings and empower them to advocate for themselves and communicate how the situation made them feel.
