Case: Such lists are subjective and mere opinions, but BBC Culture lists Rashomon as the fourth-best foreign language film of all time, and Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (which also has OB content) as the best foreign language film of all time. The Chicago Tribune lists Rashomon as the 22nd-best film of all time.
According to Robbins and Judge, people's behavior and conclusions are based on their perception of what reality is, not on reality itself. In Rashomon, we see four versions of a murder from the perspectives of the victim (via a séance), his wife, the bandit Tajômaru, and the woodsman. The woodsman is the only witness who can claim objectivity, but he turns out to be the only witness whom we can conclude with certainty has lied, because he stole the dagger.
Question 1: What roles do fundamental attribution errors, blaming the victim, self-serving bias, selective perception, and outcome bias play in distorting the four witnesses' perceptions?
Question 2: According to Wikipedia, the Rashomon effect occurs when an event is given contrary interpretations or descriptions. Give one example each of when the Rashomon effect has recently occurred in business, occurred in politics, and occurred in journalism.
Question 3: Is it possible to know what is true? If not, how does one become confident, bold, and self-efficacious in light of our limited cognitive ability? If so, how is true knowledge possible in light of the long list of sources of perceptual error?
Question 4: What does the rotting Rashomon gate in which the priest, the woodsman, and the commoner take shelter to symbolize? What does the woodsman's willingness to adopt the infant mean to the priest? What does the infant symbolize?
Question 5: When is it wise for a manager to believe the claims of a single employee in a disagreement or conflict? When should we have faith in any one information source?
