Case Study, Part A
Stacy Carpenter is a 9-year-old Hispanic female who is seen in the pediatric clinic today for a well-child checkup because she wants to play softball in the fall. Stacy weighs 120 pounds, which places her at the 120th percentile for weight. She is 55 inches tall. Stacy's blood pressure is 130/90 mmHg and her heart rate is 90 bpm at rest. Stacy's mother is visibly overweight. Stacy's mother knows that obesity is a problem in many school-aged children today and asks for help in changing Stacy's diet, lifestyle, and weight loss strategies. The nurse asks Stacy to do a quick 24-hour food recall. Stacy identifies the following:
- Breakfast: two Pop Tarts, glass of chocolate milk, and one glazed donut.
- Lunch: two slices of pepperoni pizza and two breadsticks, one serving of canned peaches, a bottle of fruit juice, and a sugar cookie for dessert.
- Supper: three chicken enchiladas, Mexican rice, refried beans, chips and salsa, and two sopapillas.
When the nurse asks about exercise. Stacy says she really does not do any exercising except for recess at school.
