International Political Economy
Essay Question:
Utilise ONE of the Essay Questions below (and as indicated in the unit guide). N.B. Bear in mind that you cannot do the same question for your Essay as you did for the Briefing Paper i.e. if you chose to do one of the questions from Week 5 for your Briefing Paper, you cannot write an essay on the same question. You may make minor adjustments to the question you wish to address in your essay. However, you MUST seek prior approval from Dr Kim at least several weeks before the due date and indicate on the cover page of your essay that approval has been sought. While the essay questions are provided for you, you should demonstrate why this question is puzzling (based on your own understanding of the readings and research you have conducted) from the outset.
Question 1. Do you agree or disagree with the statement that the developed countries are ‘kicking away the ladder' of development for developing countries while carving out development space for themselves under multilateral trade and investment rules? Explain why.
Question 2. What role has the U.S National Security State (as opposed to 'neo-liberal' or its polar opposite, 'developmental state') played in driving America's technological preeminence; why is the distinction important?
Question 3. What are the major factors facilitating and/or impeding effective global climate governance policies?
Question 4. How might state action facilitate (or even be a necessity) in driving national clean energy transitions?
Question 5. The platform power of business is undermining the state's traditional governing role. Do you agree or disagree; why?
Question 6. Are the rise of new global power actors diminishing the state's capacity to govern the economy or are coalitions of dominant states and national corporations threatening global governance?
Research and References
The aim of a research essay is to demonstrate your understanding and critical engagement with the core readings in this course AND to go beyond the required readings by conducting independent research. As a general guide, I would recommend you utilize a minimum of four sources from the course's Required Readings list in addition to the sources you will have found through your own independent research. When using any source, ensure you use these in a substantive manner - in other words, don't just list 15-20 sources to fill up a page of references. You must have cited these references in-text and used them effectively to develop your argument.
For further readings, the ‘suggested for further reading' list might be a useful place to start. Using library resources, both paper and electronic, will be essential for a successful essay. Essays that rely on only a few sources will lose marks. It is vital to reference throughout your essay - ie. the sources for ALL your ideas and information, in addition to quotations. This is crucial in order to assess the quality of your work. Failure to reference is tantamount to plagiarism. Essays without references or bibliography or with inadequate referencing will be returned unmarked.
You are welcome to use either in-text or footnotes referencing styles. The main point is that whichever referencing system you choose, do it properly and consistently.
