Question 1. Are there drawbacks to the rise of complex societies? In other words, is every aspect of civilization good? Are there still problems today that stretch back to the rise of civilization?
Question 2. What role did technological innovations and trade play in the rise of Mesopotamian societies? What innovations led to turning points in the histories of these societies? How widely did they trade?
Question 3. Compare and contrast the early development of complex societies in Egypt and Nubia with their development in Mesopotamia. What factors help to explain any differences?
Each essay should be about 600-700 words in length (equivalent to about 2 double-spaced pages in a 12-point font). Be sure to answer all parts of the question and bring in specifics from your readings. This carries more weight and will earn you a higher grade than using general or vague statements. In addition to content, this should reflect your best writing in terms of organization, grammar, and spelling.
Do's:
1. Put all verbs in the past tense.
2. Utilize all sources on Blackboard and the textbook.
3. Cite any source. A page number for the textbook is sufficient: "Quote..." (345). or (J. Green video)
4. Write the essay in your own words.
Don'ts:
1. Do not start surfing the Web for answers. Stick with course materials.
2. Do use use "Bentley-speak" or long passages from the text as a substitute for your own writing and thoughts.
3. Do not use useless filler language. Example: "According to Jerry Bentley, author of Traditions and Encounters.... " or On Page 123, it says.... I already know the title of our textbook, its content and I already know Bentley is one of the authors. Just cite as I outlined above.
4. Do not use the pronoun, I. I think.... As I read in the book.... I believe....
