Historic markers at second Streetlight an bridge's downstream side from the point where the bridge widens. The 'West Side Milling District' historical marker shows the construction of the First Street Canal that still underlies the West River Parkway in front of the Guthrie Theater and Mills City Museum on the riverbank above. The museum was built in the ruins of the second Washburn A Mill4 and many of the remaining riverbank buildings were originally mills or hosted supporting industries for the mills, like barrel making and machine shops. Even more mills used to line the grassy slope that now lies between the river and road above. Gravel ?lled channels along the river were the exits (called tailraces) for tunnels built beneath those now vanished mills.
