When speaking of the businessmen that prospered during the Gilded Age, the question often emerges of whether these men should be considered "Captains of industry," (who offered employment opportunities that bolstered the standard of living in the United States and generously donated their wealth to various organization across the country that promoted social welfare)

Whether they were "Robber Barons," who used ruthless business practices to exploit their workers and force monopolies by crushing small businesses. It is a very complicated issue involving many different variables and many different perspectives. Explore the following questions
1. What role did the government play in promoting industries during the Gilded Age?
2. What rights should businessmen expect to have in protection of the risks they took and the work they put into developing their industry?
3. What rights should workers expect to have?
4. Given the imbalance of power between industrial leaders and their employees, consider the potential for unlimited exploitation. Should businesses be able to exploit workers to the greatest degree they are able to accomplish? Or should there be clear limitations?
