Problem: A woman, let's call her Jane, applies for a job at a rental car company. She did well in the phone interview and was asked for an in-person interview. The recruiting manager told her the interview went well and they set up a third and final interview. They discussed potential salary and expected work hours. Sadly, the next day, the recruiting manager called to say there would be no third interview because Jane did not pass the company's minimum requirement for credit history. Jane was humiliated but explained the negative credit report issues were due to an extended hospitalization during which she fell behind on paying her bills. Jane also explained she was in the process of rectifying the situation. The recruiting manager said it did not matter, she could not offer Jane the job. Questions How could Jane have prevented this from happening? What restrictions did Jane face in this example? Do you think it is legitimate for an employer to review the credit reports of potential employees? Does your answer change based on the type of industry (ex: financial)? What do you think an employer is looking for when it reviews credit reports?
