Question
Recruitment At Lewis Stores
As the human resource director of Lewis Stores Berhad in Kuala Lumpur, Renee Koh knew she had her work cut out for her. Company management was moving forward on opening eight new stores in twelve months. Lewis Stores already employed 500 people in twenty stores, in addition to the headquarters staff of thirty-one. Renee knew that staffing of eight new stores would require recruiting about 100 more people. She felt that her own small office was inadequately funded and staffed to handle things well. She sat at her desk thinking over how to present a recommendation for own staffing needs.
One of Renee's concerns was bringing the subject with her boss because she had not officially told of the expansion plans. Renee had learned about them through the talks that went on in the office. While she did not like being kept in the dark, she was not surprised that she hadn't been told. Brandon Tan, the President of Lewis Stores, was noted for his autocratic leadership style. Renee has been warned early on that Brandon told subordinates only what he wanted them to know and that he expected everyone who worked for him to follow orders without questions. He was not an unkind person though, and Renee had always gotten along with him well enough. She had never confronted Mr Brandon about anything, so it was with some concern that she approached him in his office later that day.
'Mr Brandon', she begin, 'I hear that we are going to be opening eight new stores next year'
'That's right Renee' said Mr Brandon. 'We've already arranged the credit lines and picked put several of the sites'
'Well, what about staff?' asked Renee.
'Well, I assume you will take care of that, Renee, when we get to that point.'
'What about my own staff?' asked Renee. 'I think I am going to need at least three or four more people. And we already crowded for space. So I hope you plan to expand the human resource office.
'Not really,' said Mr Brandon, 'The new demands on the human resource staff will be temporary.
It wouldn't be cost effective to hire and train additions to your staff that will only be cut the next year. I am counting on you to plan the expansion staffing with our current proposed budget allowances for the human resource office. It may require some reallocation, but I am sure you can handle that.'
After the conversation with the president, one of the directors of Lewis Stores Berhad, Mr Kenji Chan approached Renee and he would like to see proper selection techniques administered because wishes to appoint people with a real future to join the company.
