Case study: Anna
Anna is 10-year-old and lives with her parents and younger brother in London. Recently her parents were invited to the school to discuss her progress. Anna is doing very well in some subjects and achieves very good grades in maths, but she is falling behind in English as she struggles with reading, and pronouncing some words. Her teacher says that she does not like reading books and finds it challenging to describe fiction stories as she takes every literally. The school teachers are concerned about Anna's behaviour during the breaks. She often wanders around the corridors, does not seem to have friends, and does not like to engage in games. She always speaks her mind which has caused several problems with her peers to whom she reacts in a quite violent manner. One teacher noted that her aggressive reactions are becoming more frequent, and Anna does not know how to calm down after the incidents. According to her parents, Anna was always a very quiet child, but they were concerned about her development, as she did not speak till around 4 year of age and did not like to play in groups. She is becoming more and more rigid in her daily routines and often appears to be very anxious due to school homework and friendships.
