The Objective:
The importance of ethics in business is evident if we are to judge by the global increase of organisations and institutions that have implemented ethics systems, as well as the sheer number of recent scandals linked to unethical behaviour by organisations, their management and staff.
This assignment is designed to provide you with the opportunity to engage with the ethics literature in a practical way. By distilling the material and synthesizing your reading and note-taking, you will be developing your judgment and analytical skill; by translating this understanding to a practical outcome, you will be testing your knowledge base and your fundamental skills in doing business ethically.
Assignment question:
(a) Explain, with relevant examples of local and/or international practices, the most pertinent individual and organisational factors that lead individuals to commit unethical acts in organisations.
(b) What recommendations can you propose to encourage such individuals to behave in more ethical ways, thus achieving organisational objectives and meeting social obligations?
For your chosen examples, you are to study the state of ethical/unethical behaviour in terms of individual ethics and organisational structure, culture and leadership processes, and to use the ethics literature to guide you both in your analysis and your recommendations.
Your attention is drawn to the following rubrics that will be taken into consideration for evaluating the submitted assignment:
• The pertinence and significance of the selected examples are explained;
• The introduction indicates the reality of the context(s) and how the analysis is to be tackled;
• The structure of the assignment is described;
• There is evidence that the appropriate ethics literature has been read up;
• The bulk of the material presented directed at addressing the issue of ethics in the real-lifeorganisation;
• Evidence is clearly provided that the material was collected originally and from reliable sources;
• The methodology - as applicable -meets standards of methodological rigour applicable for the social sciences at MBA level;
• The document proceeds logically from one point to another, without jumbling or rambling;
• The level of expression is clear, unambiguous, non-bombastic, using academic language (as opposed to ‘street' expressions and language);
• The assignment is edited and proof-read and the material is presented neatly and legibly throughout;
• Sub-titling and paragraphing are adequate and coherent in style;
• The references introduced are actually used to further arguments, and all sources are properly cited;
• Referencing is correct, both in-text and in the references section.
• The final document contributes interesting new knowledge on Business Ethics as well as practical usefulness to the selected cases or examples.
