Discussion Post: Dashboards and Tableau Visuals
As data became more accessible and visualization tools like Tableau became more ubiquitous, dashboards became the default artifact being requested from the analytics community. In companies that are less mature in their data infrastructure and insight harvesting processes, it's common for stakeholders to get excited about the prospect of seeing all their key performance indicators (KPIs) in one place, zoom in and out of categories, filter, cross-cut the data, etc. Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for them to realize they lack the time to sit with a dashboard, explore the information, and harvest actionable insights themselves. Perhaps they get overwhelmed by all the information at one time, or for some other reason, they simply don't engage with the dashboard the way they or you thought they would when the build was requested.
Dashboards absolutely have their place as the cockpit view for how clients, products, teams, and the organization as a whole are performing. They also have their place as analyst tools to quickly identify when the status quo changes, when outlier events occur, or to drill into subgroups to provide context for where or why something is happening. Dashboards are also one of the most engaging visual tools we have in our arsenal, however, we have to be careful to not let them go the way of PowerPoint animations where they become gimmicky and overused.
As we start designing our own dashboards using either the Pharmacy Wholesale or Book Publisher datasets, let's use this discussion board to gather feedback from our peers
Prompt:
Post 2 screenshots of dashboard worksheets you are constructing for the Module 3 & 4 dashboard assignment.
With each screenshot:
Question 1. What questions are you trying to answer with each visual?
Question 2. Why did you select the graphics you selected vs selecting a different type of chart?
Question 3. What interactivity are you planning to incorporate into the dashboard (tooltips, worksheet/dashboard actions, filters, parameters, etc.)?
Response Expectations
Respond to at least 2 students and provide feedback on their visuals.
Question 1. What did you like about the visuals on the dashboards?
Question 2. What would you do differently to improve the graphic (chart selection, color, references lines, etc.)
Question 3. What other questions did the visual trigger for you that might be worth exploring as the student builds their dashboard?
