Problem
Evaluate the role of peer relationships and parenting strategies on development in early childhood.
For many college students, childhood was not that long ago. Recall the first friendship you developed and spend 5 minutes writing about who that first friend was and what drew you together. It is likely that an early friendship will remain in your memories, and you may even add, "and we're still close friends today!"
After sharing about your first friendship, think about the qualities of friendship mentioned in the text-playing together, sharing toys, mutual trust, giving and receiving reinforcement-and how these change with age. Now consider the questions that follow.
Question A. Do you find that your own developmental pattern generally fits the pattern identified through research?
Question B. What qualities made some friendships more memorable, special, or lasting than others?
Question C. Some students may find that they can remember descriptive details about a friend ("I was friends with this red-haired kid at daycare who always ate paste-I can't think of his name") but not specific activities they did with their friend. How does this reflect the hallmarks of very early friendships?
