Question: Read speeches by New South boosters, some accounts of folks who worked at cotton mills, two essays about industry in the New South, and a synopsis of industrial development by a leading southern historian, Ed Ayers. Based on the readings, make an argument as to the extent industry changed or did not change southern life. In other words, how new was the New South that Tompkins and Grady were promoting? What problems had arisen? What problems were being solved? You can approach this from any angle you want, and choose either side of the debate. However, you must discuss the primary documents in your answer that serve to prove your point. You should also give some idea of why the other side is wrong.
