Background: Inter Parfums is a leading maker and distributor of known prestige perfumes and beauty company. It is almost $900 Millions company with 2/3 of its revenues from North America and Western Europe. Supply-chain woes have led businesses like Inter Parfums to rethink dependence on China. Inter Parfums is permanently shifting much of its contract manufacturing out of China and other countries to the US for products that will be sold here. Nearly 70% of parts now come from US suppliers, rather than having to depend on Chinese suppliers for glass, metal and pumps. This is up from 30% a year ago, and the company plans to have all such operations in the US by 2024.
Many questions are being raised by firms like Inter Parfums
• Is the globalization "dead"? Is this a temporary phenomenon?
• Many executives extol the virtues of sourcing from China. In normal times, what are the advantages of having production in China? Why was China a good place to order things from?
• What problem was Inter Parfums having with its sourcing from China? Was its intellectual property being stolen? If not, why couldn't Inter Parfums simply wait for Chinese supply issues to be resolved? Is it really the case that current supply-chain woes will become permanent?
• Can all firms afford to make the decision that Inter Parfums made? Why not? What is unusual about Inter Parfums? Why is Inter Parfums better able to cut dependence on China than other firms?
• For most US firms with supply-chain issues, what are the most practical options? If firms need both reliable supply and competitive supply costs, what actions can they take? Do you see any rules of thumb they can develop?
• As a student, what areas do you research for collecting and analyzing data to address the situation?
