Researchers conducted a study to investigate the effects of stress on memory. They recruited 100 participants from a local college and randomly divided them into two groups: a stress group and a control group. The stress group was subjected to a stressful situation before a memory test, while the control group was not exposed to any stress. Both groups were given a list of 20 words to memorize for two minutes and then tested on their recall.

Questions:

  1. What is the independent variable in this research study, and how was it manipulated?
  2. Identify the dependent variable in this study. What is the researcher trying to measure or assess?
  3. Explain why it was important for the researchers to randomly assign participants to either the stress or control group.
  4. Predict the results of this study. How do you think stress will impact the participants' memory recall, and why? Please use evidence-based research to support your prediction (using a peer-reviewed source).
