What is an essay plan?
An essay plan is a tool to help you organise ideas and it can be modified as you conduct reading and research. It is a basic outline of your essay and it is useful for keeping you on track and noting down specific points for inclusion including evidence.
How do I write an essay plan?
For this activity, it is best to write the plan using simple bullet points and headings or you could choose to use a simple mind map approach.
The total plan should be no more than 500 words.
1. Essay title
2. What points you will include in the introduction (remember an introduction is scene setting and should introduce the reader to the essay and identify the main evidence you will draw on).
3. The main body: this is where your discussion and evaluation will occur so note down the main arguments and outcomes.
4. Conclusion: this is where you draw everything together and reiterate the essay title. No new evidence is introduced into a conclusion but you can reinforce key evidence you have already discussed.
5. References: make a note of key references you will use - you will probably expand this in your full essay but it will prompt you to remember key citations, websites etc.
6. Percentages of content for each section: an introduction should be approximately ten percent of the word allowance; the main body should be approximately eighty percent and the conclusion ten percent. This ratio provides a good working framework.
