Question  1. What perspectives did your peers offer that you had not considered previously regarding the value of a historically informed population?

Question 2. Share other ways being more historically informed could help your peers understand or act on the community issue they identified.

Peer one- Throughout my time attending school I learned about many different lenses you could use to study certain events, I never understood how important the history lens was for examining current events. I think it is very important for us as citizens to be historically informed. History helps us see things from a different perspective. History helps us learn and see how things have changed, and evolved overtime. It helps us learn how people and society's function and behaved. Utilizing history can give us a better understanding in the modern day and why things are the way they are and potentially coming to a "fix". I personally feel like there are so many issues going on in our world today, but the issue I decided on was the war going on between Ukraine and Russia although it doesn't affect us entirely it still does in some ways. It can cause our inflation rates to go up our global food supply may be disrupted. I was in the Marine Corps for four years so my heart aches for Ukraine considering we train with them. I believe being more historically informed such as knowing more about why this happened and the wars, we have had prior may give us as citizens a better understanding of this war itself.

Peer two- Utilizing history as a lens to analyze current events is not something I really thought about until I started progressing through this course, read the feedback I received, and experienced the course work you all have been sharing. Much like other lenses utilized to gain a far wider range of data to decode, history is and can be utilized as a very powerful tool for forming an opinion or fortifying an argument on a current event. It can be something as simple as burning oneself with a candle as a child will cause us to be more diligence with our own children if we choose to have candles lit in our homes. For a complex example having explored prior historic events involving earthquakes tells us that other natural disasters follow suite like tsunamis. Because of this historic knowledge present day earthquakes usually set of early warning systems across the globe that warn the populace that possibly might experience a tsunami event. Currently the city I work in is experiencing an alarmingly number of the homeless populating perishing from a combination of chemical abuse and weather exposure. It has gotten to the point where our local government officials are openly discussing purchasing airfare and sending some of the homeless population to warmer states, so our fall and winter does not claim more people. It was mentioned in our local newspaper that that our government tried this tactic in the past. While I have not sought out more information on past experiences with this attempt at a solution I am sure it will reveal less than optimal conditions to those who are already displaced by pushing them into unknown environments simple because its warmer weather.
