Assignment:
For this threaded discussion...
- reflect on the text by Sylvia Wynter, "1492"
- reflect on the various video clips from the popular TV series "The Sopranos" surrounding debates about Columbus and his legacy as well as monuments dedicated to him.
- listen in to the radio feature by Elizabeth Alexander on the Mellon Foundation initiative to reimagine America's monuments (available in this course module)
Then proceed to find a case in which a public monument has been attacked, destroyed, enhanced or otherwise modified during the political turmoil and public protests earlier in 2020 around issues of police violence, racial inequality and related causes.
Describe and analyze an example of a public monument in the United States, United Kingdom or elsewhere being attacked, toppled, destroyed, or otherwise modified. Once you have identified such a case, introduce it to your peers with some basics including place, time, person commemorated, for what deed, and why this monument became controversial.
- What person has been commemorated with this monument?
- What historical deeds have been associated with this person?
- Why has this figure become so controversial since?
- Have you been able to gather some of the positions surrounding opponents and supporters of the monument?
- Try to find out as much as possible about the monument's history and function. Share your findings with others on this discussion board. Review peer posts and engage at least three other close analyses of monuments by offering observations or comments.
For guidance on successful participation in threaded discussions, please see syllabus section "Rules for success."
Please include a photo or link to an existing representation of the monument so that we may get an idea of what the monument looks like.
