Wechsler and Kuo (2000) used data from the 1999 College Alcohol Study to examine the relationship between student alcohol use and student definitions of binge drinking. In the study, approximately 14,000 college students from 119 schools answered questions about drinking habits. Using the definition that binge drinking is five consecutive drinks for men and four consecutive drinks for women, the researchers categorized students into four "type of drinker" categories on the basis of their answers to questions about personal alcohol use. Students in the survey were also asked how many drinks in a row they thought constituted binge drinking for men and for women. The following is a contingency table showing the relationship between the student definitions of binge drinking for a man and student alcohol use:
a. Among all students, what percentage defined binge drinking for men as being seven or more drinks in a row?
b. Write a sentence describing what would be measured by row percentages in the table. Make your answer specific to these variables.
c. Write a sentence describing what would be measured by column percentages in this table. Make your answer specific to these variables.
d. Calculate the row percentages in the table. In a few sentences, describe the relationship between type of drinker and the personal definition of binge drinking.
