For this week's Cityscape portion we looked at Brian Ulrich's "Dark Stores" series. Conduct a visual analysis of the image posted below
using the three step method you should be familiar with by now. (instructions below) Be sure to include in your analysis any observations of environmental or conservation themes the image has.
To conduct a visual analysis of a photo for this class, we will do the following steps:
Step One: Observe
First, just look at the photo. Don't rush your viewing. Try to spend at least a few minutes looking at it closely--without judgement--to notice the parts. Think of these questions to help guide your observation:
Describe what you see. • What do you notice first? • What people and objects are shown? • How are they arranged? • What is the physical setting? • What, if any, words do you see? • What other details can you see?
Step Two: Reflect
Then, generate and test hypotheses.
Why do you think this image was made? • What's happening in the image? • Who do you think was the audience for this image? • What tools were used to create it? • What can you learn from examining this image? • Is it clear that this is a contemporary photograph? How do you know? Could it transcend context?
Step Three: Question
To conclude, ask questions that lead to more observations and reflections.
What do you wonder about... who? • what? • when? • where? • why? • how?
