lrene was fourteen-years-old when she began to wake up stiff and achy. She had been an active teenager; she 'played volleyball and participated in the school band. Nowadays though, she had no energy; she constantly felt fatigued. Her hand were swollen and painful; it hurt too much to play sports or practice her clarinet. The last two mornings, she has woken up with a butter?y-rash across her face.

lrene's mom takes her to their primary care physician. After listening to lrene describe her symptoms, the doctor refers her to a rheumatologist.
