  3. How does Campbell show us that life is like a series of quests or adventures? What does Campbell show us about the conflicts we have to go through to find our true selves, our identity, our calling in life: what he would call "follow[ing] your bliss?" Do you agree that that commonality makes all of us heroes?
  4. How do the concepts about heroism provided by Campbell apply to your own life and your own experience, or do they? Offer examples and details from the video and from your own personal experience to support your answers.

Question 2: Next, answer the following questions about Louise Erdrich's "Years of My Birth":

  1. As Otto Runk is quoted by Joseph Campbell, "Everyone is a hero at birth." Erdrich has written a story about the birth and rebirth of the protagonist, Linda. How does her birth set her on a heroic path for her life? What about her character seems heroic to you? How might she seem like an unlikely hero?
  2. What sets her on her journey, and what is the abyss into which she descends?
  3. What are the demons or monsters with which she comes into conflict? Describe the battle she encounters. Who wins?
  4. In the end, what is the enlightenment that Linda receives?
