We will explore the earliest origins of the Chicana/o from the pre-Columbian periods to the 21st Century. Our readings will focus on selected aspects of the Chicana/o historical experience, including the impact of the Spanish Conquest, Mexican expansion into the American Southwest, the infiltration of Americans into the Southwest, the early contacts between whites and Chicanas/os, the collision of cultures both in Mexico as well as the northern Mexican frontier, the Mexican American War (1846-1848), and the period from the American acquisition in 1848 of Mexican territory to the present. Emphasis is placed on the role of the Chicana/o in the development of the United States throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century.
