Many questions are raised when we think about these issues. Some assimilation is forced, such as when Native Americans were forced into boarding schools and reservations. Some is by choice, as cultural identity can be both chosen and inherited. At the same time, in order to be "Americanized," one must first identify what it means to have an "American" culture. This is something we've discussed a lot - the US is a very new country. We didn't even have a country until the late 1700s. Before then, we were just a group of people who came over in 1620, stole some land, killed a lot of people, and forced our religion onto people who lived here.
