Art & Visual Literacy class- Reflection

Refer to your reflections in the below assignment clarifications ("Working Toward the Final") and use your answers to the questions asked in your paper. In addition, you are to reflect on your journey through this class. Note, this is not a course evaluation, it is your personal experience expressed through a reflective paper. This is about you and your experiences.

Your final paper will be a minimum 5-page reflective paper (you may write more) on your experience in this class. You will cite at least 5 references from the readings, lectures, videos and/or Discussion Board responses to support your positions and perspectives. Include the following parameters:

1. How has this class experience enhanced your ability to communicate visually? How are you more visually literate?

2. What has changed in terms of your perspective of how you see art, and the role of art in your life?

3. Did you encounter a "break-through moment" where you "saw" a perspective that previously was not in your experience? Describe the "experience of looking".

4. How has this class informed your identity as a student/artist/world citizen?

5. What other perspectives were prominent in your reflection?

In your essay, refer to the text/course readings/ Discussions /or personal experience with at least 5 citations to support your positions and perspectives.

Working Toward the Final

It is that "end of the term" time when you should be going back over the course, reflecting on your journey through the course. However, first complete the readings and text chapters:

Chapter 7:

"This chapter is a compilation of samples of interpretations by many interpreters of diverse artifacts and works of art. The interpretations of paintings by Edward Hopper include a traditional critical essay, a poem, and a short story. After Hopper's paintings, and indeed paintings by many other visual artists, came to interprettions of a modern dance to broaden the scope of interpretive objects from the soley visual to the kenetic and aural. Following the interpretations of paintings and a dance are interpretations of objects selected from daily popular culture, including interpretations of cartoons, "Bad Words," a TV commercial, animated characters in feature films, functional tables and dinnerware, and a magazine cover The types of interpretations in this chapter vary widely: some interpretations are art-historical in intent: that is, written by scholars of art for those interested in scholarly understandings of art (for example, Strand on Hopper, the writings on Rain by academics). Some of the interpretations are clearly fictional - a poem and a short story - but they provide interpretive responses to works of art, in this case, paintings by Edward Hopper. This chapter was written to broaden the scope of both interpreters and objects to be interpreted and to encourage us to move thoughtfully through art museums and spaces to be interpreted and to encourage us to move thoughtfully through art museums and spaces of daily living in a meaningful manner: that is, interpretively." (Barrett T. 2003. pg 195)

When reflecting on your journey through this course, review the interpretations in this chapter. How do your interpretations you created for this class compare? You have completed research into various styles and types of art and artifacts, including media and television. What about the interpretive process you've experienced in this class? What about the the use of the terms of the Elements and Principles of Design in your interpretation of a building and other art objects has helped you to understand the visual nature of things?

Interpretations need not be limited to "Fine Art" works and objects. Interpretations of items in popular culture are as valid for interpretation as any art-historical works. You experienced interpreting and analyzing media and television shows. Use your experience and contrast and compare that experience with others' interpretations you have read about in the text and readings. Review how some of your fellow classmate's have interpreted various objects and art. Note how they may have seen something different than you. Note how they (your fellow students) express their interpretations. Compare and contrast another's interpretation and note what may be different and/or similar to yours. What have you learned about yourself through the process of interpreting art and objects?

Chapter 8 - Principles for Interpreting Art

Be certain to read and understand the bulleted concepts revealed in this chapter on page 198. Use the information in this chapter as a means to reviewing the content in this text. Each one of the bulleted points (page198) is important. Most of what you have read about in this chapter is relevant to both the purpose of this text and the course. You have experienced much of what is discussed and reviewed in chapter 8. Be certain to share your personal experiences with using the content in this chapter and the text, showing your understanding and ability to apply this information practically. Remember, to interpret a work of art is to make meaningful connections with what you see and experience with an artwork.
