Choose Your Fluids

There are many fluid options to choose from. As you have learned, upon eating, all kcalories from food are converted into either immediate energy use or stored for future use. Any excess energy beyond what the body is able to use is converted into fat. The body does not discriminate if these kcalories are derived from beverages. Like food, calories can be obtained from what you eat. Examine your food diary and review your fluid selections.

What is the chief nutrient in a glass of red wine and a cup of hot unsweeten tea? What other nutrients are there in the beverages? The National Cancer Institute defines nutrient density as "Food that is high in nutrients but relatively low in calories".

Evaluate how nutritionally "dense" the beverages are and how these beverages are of value or contribute to a "nutrition for a lifetime" of health.

Offer evidence of its nutritional health value with a nutrition label and any other relevant sources.
