Question: For a long time the most popular measure of economic development was growth of per capita GDP. Now many people think that the Human Development Index, which includes measures of health and education, is a better measure. Why is it so difficult to define and measure economic development? Explain the advantages and disadvantages of various measures of economic development, including growth of per capita GDP and the Human Development Index. If you were going to construct your own measure of economic development, what one or two measurable variables would you include beyond health and education? Explain your answer in detail without being repetitive or obvious. Be sure to discuss the main strengths and weakness of s of GDP as a measure of human well-being.
