3. Start by zooming and browsing the panorama. This sketch gives a glimpse of San Francisco's Fisherman's Warf, Alcatraz and across the bay to Berkeley and Oakland.
4. Next, view the map of California in the map. Typically maps are oriented so that north on the map is located at the top of the page. Cartographers may choose to orient their map in a different direction however.

Q8. Identify the name of one place found on this map that would not be found on a contemporary map of Butte County.
6. Navigate to the inset map of the Bay Area. A railroad line is shown terminating at the 'developed' part of the San Francisco. Note the small bay found south (to the right on the map) of this point.
Q9. What is the name of the point feature found just west (below) where the rail line terminates?
7. Go back to Google Earth Pro, select the map titled, "Entrance to San Francisco Bay California". From a Trigonometrical Survey (1859). This map can be opened in Google Earth Pro by expanding North America and then locate US Cities and you will see San Fran. Bay 1859.
8. Zoom to the entrance to the Golden Gate.
Q 10. Using the depth values given on this bathymetric map, identify the depth values for five locations on a line extending from the deepest place in the Golden Gate to the Alcatraz Lighthouse. These figures could be used to generate depth profile. NOTE: The deepest point in the Golden Gate is 69 fathoms. 1 fathom = 6 feet). In order to make a depth profile, you can use the path tool and click on the 69 then click another point on the Alcatraz Lighthouse. The tool is the one in the red box.
Q. 11. When you turn off the 1859 Entrance to San Francisco Bay map on Google Earth Pro, what present day feature is located over that point?
9. Navigate to the developed part of the City that corresponds to the area viewed on the previous map where the rail line terminated.
Q12. What is the name of the small bay found south of downtown?
10. In the lower left-hand corner of the map are coordinates to selected locations. Q13. What are the latitude and longitude coordinates of the Alcatraz lighthouse (in degrees, minutes and seconds) (If you are in Google Earth Pro, they are at the bottom of your page. You learned how to set the coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds from your 1st lab)
11. Next, select in Google Earth Pro Rumsey collection the "San Francisco 1915" which is the 'The "Chevalier" Commercial, Pictorial and Tourist Map of San Francisco (1915)' .

Q14. What type of cartographic representation is used to show the buildings?

14. Zoom into the area around the Ferry Building and the Embarcadero (just northeast of the Bay Bridge) at an eye altitude of about 5000 feet.
15. Google Earth Pro provides historical aerial imagery for selected areas. Under the View pulldown menu check mark Historical imagery. Flip through the imagery on the tool bar. This waterfront was transformed after World War II into an industrial area. By 1987 there was an elevated freeway along the waterfront, but after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to the freeway led to its demolition. In the years that followed, the area was again transformed into a pedestrian-friendly waterfront, with public spaces and shopping.
Q16. What of these changes are evident on the aerial imagery? Identify a feature that changed for at least 2 dates (1987 vs. 2022)
16. To get a feel for what this area looks like today, choose Street View and drag the icon to the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building.
