Coronavirus Vaccine

Purpose: To investigate a new vaccine, to assess how the antigen was prepared and what benefits and disadvantages are associated with that preparation choice. (In other words, the trade-offs.) This is not meant for you to search the Internet to get the 'correct' answer. I will not accept copied and pasted text. Use your own unique words. This is a practice exercise and as such, you could use it as a tool for study.

Directions: Read the New York Times article from March 20, 2020 titled What It's Like to Be Part of the First Coronavirus Vaccine Trial. After, use complete thoughts and sentences to answer the following questions.

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/what-its-like-to-test-the-first-coronavirus-vaccine.html

1. What name of the infectious agent that this vaccine is preventing from establishing itself in the host? What is the name of the resultant disease it prevents?

2. Are all infectious agents viruses? Are all vaccines to prevent viral infections? Are bacteria the same as viruses?!

3. Which type of antigen preparation was the volunteer given?

4. What protein antigen of the coronavirus do you most suspect the volunteer's cells will be expressing?

5. Think about how the antigen will 'look' to her immune system. Will that antigen be free or attached? What specific lymphocytes will be the primary response to this type of antigen preparation?

6. Edward Jenner tested his vaccine by challenging his gardener's son with actual small pox. Thankfully, that is not the way the success of this vaccine will be tested. How will they test the vaccine's efficacy? Is that a direct measurement of efficacy? What does that mean is happening in her body?

7. Describe and explain the cascade of events from the recognition of the antigen to the establishment of memory. (This question is basically asking you to explain the flow of AAI back to me but in the context of this specific antigen and it will require more writing from you.)
