Assignment:

Problem:

The Stratosphere Corporation stocks part number MGT660, which it needs for the manufacturing of advanced communications satellites. Stratosphere's annual usage rate (i.e., its demand rate) for part MGT660 is constant and known to be 5000 units/year. The part is purchased at a cost of $200.0/unit from an independent supplier in West Lafayette, IN. Stratosphere's annual inventory holding cost for MGT660 is 25% of the per-unit purchase cost.

a. Each time Stratosphere places an order for part MGT660, it orders 120 units. The purchasing department at Stratosphere claims that this is the optimal order quantity. If the purchasing department is correct, what must be Stratosphere's fixed ordering cost, S?

For all of the remaining parts of this question, assume S = $112.5 per order (irrespective of your answer in Part a.) Assume D = 5,000 per year, purchase price $200 per unit and inventory holding cost of 25%.

b. What is Stratosphere's optimal order quantity?

c. Suppose that due to space limitations, Stratosphere's maximum order quantity is limited to 100 units. Taking this into account, what is the best order quantity?

d. Since Stratosphere has space to hold no more than 100 units, the owners of the warehouse next door are willing to offer space for up to 40 more units. What is the maximum annual rent that Stratosphere should be willing to pay to these warehouse owners?
