Humanitarian intervention in the service of human rights often involves the violation of state sovereignty, one of the most important principles of international relations. Drawing upon the discussion of the philosophical foundations in the Shestack reading, which philosophical foundation (if any) do you think offers the most support, i.e. the best argument for violating state sovereignty? When there is a conflict between the principles of sovereignty (on the part of one state) and self-determination (on the part of a non-state group) which do you think is the more important principle to be upheld and why? Reflecting on these issues, do you think that NATO intervention in Kosovo was justified? Why or why not? What moral issues were raised by this intervention? In responding to this question, consider the points raised by Gordon Brown in the video interview regarding a global ethic and global responsibility.
