TCP/IP Principles and Protocols
An ISP has allocated your company a block of IPv4 addresses that included this address:
132.34.12. XY/22, where "XY" are the last two digits of your student ID.
From this block, your organization has tasked you to create four (4) subnets as follows:
First subnet: must have a minimum of 275 addresses.
Second subnet: must have a minimum of 200 addresses.
Third subnet: must have a minimum of 100 addresses.
Fourth subnet: must have a minimum of 50 addresses.
For each subnet, provide the following information, and include your calculations:
The number of addresses you allocated
The prefix (/n) and mask (dotted-decimal format)
The first and last (or broadcast) address
Marks for showing your detailed calculations for each of the answers
Marks may be deducted for data that is disorganized or illogically organized. You may want to organize your data in a table. Calculations must be clear and logically organized.
Note that most of the marks are for showing you know how to get the answer (calculations). This is the reason that lack of calculations loses 5 marks.
Packet Tracer
Download and open ‘Assignment1_T1_2024.pkt' using Packet Tracer and answer the following questions using the given network.
List all the network devices present in this network and their associated OSI layers.
For each router in the network, identify the number of unused networking ports and the default bandwidth of the ports.
Wireshark
A Wireshark scan has produced a packet capture, saved to a file named ‘Assignment1.pcapng' and available in Moodle. Download and open this file in Wireshark, then answer these questions about the scan:
View Frame 7: Identify the interface on which this packet was captured, and what transport layer protocol was used.
View Frame 17: Determine the direction of the packet. Was this packet from client to server, or vice versa? Explain your reasoning.
Question 3 is on the next page.
This question allows you to engage in extended learning about how an application like Ping works.
Scenario: You are the Help Desk lead and have just received a call from a non-IT employee, Billy, working from home, who says he cannot login to the network. Billy explains that he has tried pinging 127.0.0.1 (his local loopback address) and it was fine, but still cannot connect to the network.
Write a paragraph containing your explanation to Billy about why a successful ping of his loopback address might not detect the reason his computer cannot connect to the network.
What might you ask Billy to do next and why?
