Question: As noted in Caines's review of Wolf Hall and elsewhere, Mantel's novel engages-either through allusion or through paraphrase or summary-with many texts: the Bible, Machiavelli's The Prince (105;pt. II; ch. 2), Castiglione's The Courtier (400-401; pt. IV; ch. 3), Marsiglio of Padua' Defensor pacis (The Defender of Peace) (531-32; pt. VI; ch. 1), and Sir Thomas More's Utopia. Sir Thomas Wyatt's poetry is another allusion, some of which was written about Anne Boleyn. In his essay on the "denovation" (Burke)-i.e. the negative aspect of an invention-associated with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-1400s, Burke reveals that many scholars consider the effects of the printing press as an "information 'explosion'" (Burke), not unlike the effects of the internet access we enjoy today. What might Mantel be getting at with these many allusions? What idea might lay behind their inclusion in Wolf Hall?
