Question - Brandon Bickerton, 41 years of age
Brandon is a 41 year old man with Level 1 Autism Spectrum Disorder. Brandon is quite a private person and enjoys his structured routine regarding his cooking, cleaning, shopping and accessing public transport to see his various medical professionals (Psychiatrist, GP and monthly Psychologist appointments to help him manage his aggression). Brandon lives in a unit, which is supported by a funded disability service provider. There are several other service users, living in other adjacent units, which are also funded by the same provider. Brandon prefers to keep to himself and doesn't enjoy going places with the service, or the other service users. He doesn't enjoy the company of anyone who lives close by and just wants help with his shopping, groceries and cleaning.
Lately, the service provider has reduced the amount of hours he receives support worker assistance for his cooking, cleaning and groceries. Brandon has told the service that he's struggling to cope without the 10 hours per week he used to get. In the last 4 weeks, he has received less than 5 hours per week.
Some of the support staff have told Brandon (informally) that the service is designed for people who participate socially and there's plenty of other people with a disability who should take his place as they would love the social aspect of the activities that the service facilitates. Brandon is becoming annoyed with the way the service has been operating and is thinking that he might want to change service provider, however he doesn't want to move out of his home and if he has to move out of his home to change service provider, then he won't change services.
You work for an advocacy service in Brandon's neighbourhood and he has sought your help with his situation.
Please answer the following questions and complete the task.
A) What are the rights and responsibilities of both Brandon and his service provider in this situation?
b) What might be the most appropriate pathway of action to support Brandon to take, regarding this matter and what would be the steps you'd encourage him to take?
c) How can you help Brandon see and understand what his rights are and if they have been infringed?
d) List 2 situations of potential risk for Brandon. What is his dignity of risk and how can you work with him to minimise these risks?
e) TASK - Prepare a letter, approximately one page long, which outlines the complaint to the service provider. Address this letter to the service provider, from Brandon and list the outcomes that he would like achieved, the timeframes he'd like responses to and the ethical or legal basis for his requests.
f) Outline 2 methods to monitor and review the advocacy process, and 2 ways to seek feedback to enhance the process?
g) How will you observe, monitor, collaborate and discuss progress with Brandon? List one method for each.
h) Provide two (2) examples of situations where you would need to seek feedback from a supervisor and a colleague to ensure Brandon's needs are being met. Ensure that confidentiality requirements are addressed in your answer too.
