Youth Case Study
Hunter is a 15-year-old boy who has recently been seen by the school counsellor for lack of attendance and falling asleep in class all the time. Hunter expresses he does not want to speak to the counsellor, as his friends will kick him out of the group for being 'a wimp and a loser.' Hunter says his friends are all that he has right now. Hunter had good grades all throughout school and it is only recently that they have begun to fall, and he has been experiencing the tardiness and falling asleep in class. He states he does not care about graduating anymore because he does not know what he wants to do in his life. When asked about home life, Hunter expresses that he lives with his mom, grandmother, and 2 cousins who his mom is fostering. He states his dad left 6 months ago, but that 'this was usual' and 'he will be back eventually.' His mom works 2 jobs and is not around to care for him very often or help him with his schoolwork. It is learned that the group of friends Hunter hangs around are known for being 'troublemakers' at the school - they are constantly starting fights with other peers and have been caught on more than one occasion drinking and smoking weed behind the school parking lot. Hunter admits he has tried these things but does not really enjoy them. However, it is all his friends like to do and he feels a need to fit in with them.
